It is also possible to check appointment availability and to book some appointments on line once you have registered for on line access with the practice.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Patients are now able to book a face to face appointment with some GPs on line or by speaking to a member of the reception team. Patients may also book a pre-bookable telephone appointment.
Patients are able to book a routine telephone appointment in advance. However, if you feel you are unable to wait until the next available appointment you may submit a same day request. All requests for same day appointments should be made by telephone as early as possible after 8.00 am. You will be asked by the Receptionist to give a brief reason for the request. This is to ensure you are signposted appropriately. Calls will be dealt with initially by one of our Nurse Practitioners or GPs. Our Nurse Practitioners can deal with an extensive range of minor illness conditions (see Minor Illness information) and will try to deal with your problem. If after speaking to you, it is necessary for you to be seen by a health care professional, we will make arrangements for you to be seen at a mutually convenient time.
We have been trialling an automated booking system. The system provides patients with an alternative option for booking a same day telephone appointment, checking or cancelling an existing appointment or requesting a repeat prescription. We are hopeful that this will improve access for patients who need to contact us for a same day telephone appointment but are unable to call at 8.00 am. A number of same day appointments are available to book between 6.00 am and 7.59 am Monday to Friday. Patients can access the automated system by pressing Option 1 on our telephone system. Patients using the system are advised to listen to instructions carefully and not to hang up until the system confirms that your appointment has been booked. During the call you will be asked to leave a short message for the clinician to explain the reason for the request. Please keep the message brief. Messages can only be retrieved for confirmed appointments. Therefore, if the system does not confirm that your appointment has been booked, your message cannot be accessed by our staff. Patients wishing to request their repeat prescription via the automated system will need to obtain a PIN number from Reception or Dispensary.
Patients may continue to book appointments with our reception team by selecting Option 2 on the telephone system. Once we are happy that the system is working correctly, we will look at expanding the automated booking system to provide an alternative option for the booking of other appointments (eg blood tests, Flu). We welcome feedback from patients who have used this system.
Patients should be aware that the morning telephone list may be closed early due to high patient demand and at the discretion of the duty doctor. Patients are therefore advised to contact the surgery as early as possible. If the telephone list has been closed when you call, you may be asked to call back the following day or attend a local walk in centre if you are unable to wait. A list of alternative urgent care services including local walk in centres is available from reception and on this website. Information is also available on the appropriate use of Accident and Emergency Departments.
Emergency appointments are available after 10:30 am at Burbage Surgery each weekday. We do not offer an emergency service from Wolvey Surgery (closed at present due to Covid)
We respectfully ask patients to use this service for emergencies only. When telephoning for an emergency appointment you will be asked for a contact telephone number by the receptionist and your name will be placed on the duty doctor’s telephone list. The doctor will then call you to discuss your request and if you need to be seen, arrangements will be made for you to come to the surgery. Emergency requests received after 18:30 on weekdays and weekends will be dealt with by the out of hours service who may be contacted on 111.
Telephone Appointments (Please telephone after 11.00 am)
Telephone consultations are now offered routinely by all of the doctors at the practice. Telephone appointments are appropriate for:
- Follow up care or when it is anticipated that an examination is not required and your query can be dealt with over the telephone
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
Extended Access appointments
We are increasing the number of appointments available for you to see a GP in the early mornings, evenings or at weekends across West Leicestershire.
Depending on your individual circumstances and symptoms, we may offer you an ‘extended access’ appointment. Please note however, that these appointments will not be in your usual GP practice and may not be with one of your usual GPs or nurses.
Depending on the reason for your appointment, and if you are in agreement, it may be suitable for you to see an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, instead of a GP.
The clinician you see will be able to access relevant sections of your medical notes and will communicate what has happened during your appointment back to your usual GP practice.
These appointments will be available at the following locations:
Loughborough Urgent Care Centre at Loughborough Community Hospital
Coalville Community Hospital
Hinckley and Bosworth Community Hospital

NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service
We are participating in a new approach to improve access for patients to GP appointments. The aim is to direct patients to the most appropriate healthcare professional, which may be a GP or a pharmacist.
From Monday 19th July 2021 if your symptoms could be resolved by a booked consultation with the pharmacist instead of the GP, you will be given a same-day referral to a pharmacy of your choice.
We think this is a good thing. Once you see how great your local pharmacist is – they are highly trained and skilled clinicians experienced in treating minor illnesses – we don’t think you’ll look back.
This will also help us to free up GP appointments for people with more complex health needs and ensure that everyone gets treated at the right time, by the right healthcare professional.

What is this new service about?
From 19th July 2021, when you call the practice, you will be asked about your symptoms. If they indicate that you can best be helped by a pharmacist, you will be offered a same day private consultation with a community pharmacist at [insert local choice of pharmacies].
Community pharmacists have already successfully seen thousands of patients for a consultation for a minor illness, following a call to NHS 111. This new way of arranging consultations with the pharmacist by a GP practice, has been successfully piloted around the county.
Why are you doing this?
Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals and experts in medicines. They can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for all sorts of minor illnesses, and a same day consultation can be arranged quickly and at a time to suit you. This in turns frees up GP appointments for those people with more complex symptoms who really need to see a GP.
What happens when I see the community pharmacist?
We will share your personal details with the pharmacist and details of your minor illness and the pharmacist will contact you to arrange your consultation on the same day, or at a time that suits you.
You may be seen in person in a private consulting room, if the pharmacist thinks it appropriate, or your consultation may be carried out over the phone or via video. You will be asked about your medical history and symptoms and current medication, in the same way the GP would ask you about them.
Usually, the pharmacist will provide you with advice and can sell you with an over the counter product where needed, if you choose. They will also send details of your consultation back to us for our records.
If the pharmacist feels you need to be seen by a GP urgently, they will call us to ensure you are seen, or they will advise you to contact the hospital Emergency Department if deemed necessary. You may also be referred back to us to arrange a non-urgent appointment or follow up.
What if I get free prescriptions from my GP?
Your pharmacist will provide you with advice on how to treat your symptoms, which may include a medicine or product. Medicines that can be purchased in a pharmacy to treat minor illnesses, are usually inexpensive and would not normally be prescribed by your GP anyway. You are free to choose if you wish to make a purchase or not.
What happens if I don’t want to see the pharmacist?
We want to ensure that you are offered an appointment with the most appropriate qualified health care professional based on your symptoms. If you have minor illness symptoms that can be treated the same day through a consultation with a qualified community pharmacist, but do not want to accept this referral, you will be offered a routine appointment with your GP at a future date.
What if the patient is my child?
Children aged over one years are eligible to use this service and can be seen by the pharmacist. Children who are able to make their own decision about their health may be seen unaccompanied.
Why is this a good thing for patients?
Community pharmacies are local, open longer hours than the GP practice and can offer you the same consultation outcome at a time that is more convenient for you. If the pharmacist thinks you need to see the GP, they can help arrange an urgent appointment for you.
Patients who have already used the service liked the convenience of having a consultation on the same day, or a day that suited them, at a pharmacy of their choice. 78% of people who had a consultation with a community pharmacist were successfully helped.
