The Burbage Surgery and the Patient Participation
Group are looking for volunteers to join them.
The purpose of the group is to represent the
patients and liaise with the surgery regarding all
relevant matters. We also raise funds, to supply
benefits for the surgery such as, blood pressure
monitors, high-rise seating and defibrillators.
We meet on the first Tuesday of the month, so if
you are a patient of Burbage Surgery and think
you would be interested in joining us, please
contact Tony Sheldon (Chair) on 07729-367763 or
leave your details at the surgery reception.
Burbage Surgery Patient Participation Group
The group was founded in December 2005 with a formal constitution. It became affiliated to the National Association for Patient Participation (NAPP) and has since become a registered charity (Charity No. 1125738).
Structure and Organisation
Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, with an annual meeting taking place in April each year. At present there are 13 committee members, including the practice manager and a doctor.
The officers are chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer and secretary.
Membership of Burbage Surgery PPG is open to all patients registered with the surgery irrespective of age, race, gender, disability and ethnicity. Current members of the group are representative of the patients registered with the practice. The PPG currently includes members from the Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities with ages ranging from late 30s to 70s. Applications from younger people, disabled, and BAME (black and minority ethnic) communities are particularly welcome. If anyone wish to join us. Please contact any member of the committee or leave your details at the surgery reception.
Disciplines
Formal minutes of each meeting are recorded and circulated to all for approval at the following meeting. Four members form a quorum.
National support
Membership of NAPP has continued from the start of the group in 2005. Committee members are able to read its monthly bulletins online and access all its resources. Members have attended NAPP conferences and are in discussion and meetings with other representatives of other PPGs in the Hinckley area to exchange views and ideas.
Charity
Three trustees were appointed to comply with the Charity Commission registration and audited accounts are submitted to the commission each year.
Publicity
Group and surgery activities are published regularly under Surgery news in the double-page-spread in the Local Rock, a free editorial and advertising publication which has a circulation in the Burbage area of 13,000. The newsletter is also published on the NAPP website.
Fund raising
Funds have been raised from various activities, including fashion shows, five charity golf days with the last one raising £1,700, Christmas raffles with joint fund raising for other charities like Prostate Cancer and Menphys. Other events have included a skittle night, walking treasure hunt and Christmas market trips.
All money raised goes towards surgery benefits, such as blood pressure monitors for both Wolvey and Burbage surgeries, high-rise seating for the reception areas in the surgery reception and two defibrillators for both surgeries, as well as toys and books for the children’s area.
Patient contact
In addition to keeping patients informed of events, activities and issues through the newsletter, members also meet them face-to-face at yearly flu clinics and have carried out surveys to find out patient views on the surgery and their treatment.
